My uncle,Bill Fothergill, who was stationed in Maverick Sq, was one of the first on the scene at the Luongo Restaurant fire. He stepped outside the building after battling the blaze and got trapped under Ladder 8 when the building collapsed. After being rescued, he spent considerable time recuperating from his injuries. He spent the next 10 years working at headquarters.Prior to this he had been the tillerman at Bowdoin Sq for a number of years. His account of the Luongo fire that he told to us over forty years ago was so accurate, that when I finally saw the actual story I could not believe it.
