Canestaro near Fenway Park is great!

Walking through the Fenway neighborhood before the Red Sox game, you can't help thinking about food. The smells surround you. Great aromas you expect only in a great Italian restaurant. Your mouth waters and a hunger deposits itself in the pit of your stomach.
We start to look around for just the right place. Homey, cozy, reasonable and hopefully good is what we are searching for. We settle on a small, fenced in restaurant just off the beginning of Park Drive, called Canestaro, on Peterborough Street. There is plenty of outside seating on the patio, and that’s where we head. But first a quick check inside.
One of the waitresses invites us to look into the open kitchen. We are introduced to the cooks and I immediately see one cooking a veal dish that sets my mouth to instant drooling.
"What is that you are cooking?” I ask.
"Veal Piccata" is the reply.
No need for a menu; I now know what I'm having for dinner.
Stephen Canestaro lets us snap some pictures of the patio and then shows us to our table. My wife has the frutti di mare, similar to a cioppino, and my son has some ravioli. Simply put, this is the best Italian cooking we've ever had. That includes several Italian restaurants in San Francisco, New York, and Chicago that can't quite reach the level of this place.
That veal piccata is just as delicious, if not more, than it looked while in the skillet. Oh, I'll never forget that taste that spoiled me for anyplace else. Absolutely scrumptious!
After dinner, we enjoy some anisette with espresso, and we walk out completely satisfied.
We come back to Wakefield and try to find some other good places to eat. My wife asks me if I like them and I say, "yeah, but they're no Canestaro."

Good Italian food in the Fenway

Canestaro Restaurant is a wonderful experience. We went there recently for a special dinner and were pleasantly surprised, not having any particular expectations, but wanting to try someplace new and local (16 Peterborough Street in the Fenway neighborhood). The food at Canestaro is very good. The
dishes add a bit of the owner's own signature touch to old favorites. Each course was timed perfectly to
arrive with just enough time in-between. We enjoyed a leisurely meal, without feeling rushed or waiting for the next course to arrive.
The service was exceptional. Our waitress made us feel like we were old friends. She offered the right
amount of suggestions and descriptions of the entrees. She checked back to make sure that everything was OK, without the slightest bit of our feeling like she was hovering. The restaurant was busy on the night that we dined, but our waitress made us feel like we were her most important table. We were very surprised when our bill arrived. We expected that for the two of us it would be over $100 (it was only $52). There are exceptional values for wines, shared appetizers, entrees and desserts. Portion sizes are quite
generous at Canestaro.
When we returned the following Monday, we shared the gourmet “Supreme” pizza. Wow!! We will definitely visit this Fenway gem again and recommend it to others.
