Good Deal/Noisy Weekends
By Marie Wells

I recently spent 5 days in Boston in high summer and the only place I could snag a room for less than an arm and both legs was the Harborside Inn. The hotel is located in an historic 1858 building and is in the process of doubling its capacity. The staff is great, everyone is friendly and helpful. The room itself was adequate; I don't ask for much but a comfy bed. Great atmosphere with original brick walls and wavy hardwood floors. Amenities are few; this is one of the reasons the cost is more reasonable than other places nearby. There's a soda machine and ice maker in the basement and the rooms come with hair dryers and irons/ironing boards. Oh yeah, there are two computers in the lobby if you should want to check your e-mail while staying in the hotel. That's it. But who needs amenities when you're one block from Quincy Market and two blocks from Long Wharf? Additionally, the hotel is surrounded by places to eat and drink. And there lies the problem: if you intend to get some sleep before 2am every Friday and Saturday in the summertime, by all means, book an atrium room. The area is party central for thousands of young people and the noise does not let up until the taverns close at 2am. I had been warned about the noise level and was prepared for it - so I thought. That said, the Harborside is a bargain compared to 99.99% of Boston hotels in the summer and the location is killer. Bottom line: I'd stay there again, and I'm very fussy about where I stay when I travel.
