427 Walnut Ave is right near where the dot on the map is, because my agency has a building in that block of Walnut Ave, and it's right there. As I said, I'm very familiar with that neighborhood, and there is nothing interesting (and certainly not a city) at that dot!

Mr. Blum is listed in the Boston phone book at that address and phone number. Who wants to call him first?

Yet Another Newstead Montegrade Travel Page - just scroll down past the giant ad and my user profile (yes, of course that's *exactly* what I look like, snort). Still a work in progress, of course. Anybody who wants to add to that page (right now, I've only built something under "Warnings or Dangers," - feel free to add tips under What to Pack, What to See, Local Customs, etc.), let me know and I'll e-mail you my password.
Newstead Montegrade is the name of my grand estate. Some people like to consider the portion of the estate across the street from my mansion as part of "Franklin Park," but it's actually just my back forty. I would think that would be obvious--why else would I own newsteadmontegrade.com? I got Eeka's phone message (hi Eeka!) and I'm glad to see so many people interested in uncovering the mystery of Newstead Montegrade. I actually have no idea what it is or what it means. I live across the street from it. If you start at Newstead Montegrade with your back to White Stadium and walk along the path towards Walnut Avenue, mine is the small house at the corner of School Sreet that you'd be looking at the whole time. I've looked on-line at a few old maps of Boston, and even the earlier West Roxbury, back when Franklin Park was known as "West Roxbury Park," and there's no mention of Newstead Montegrade. An earlier map, from the mid 1800s, shows the area parcelled off into estates or farms--I don't know which--but there's no mention of Newstead Montegrade. Etymology: could "montegrade" be mount + grade, with the defintion of grade as "a sloping road"? Basically, Newstead Hill Road, Newstead Pass, or just a fancy way of saying Newstead Street. As for Newstead--there's Newstead Abbey, Lord Byron's old home. There's a hill in the other half of the park, Schoolmaster Hill, named for Emerson. Maybe there's some literary reference or inside joke we're missing? Maybe Montegrade is a mispelling of Montegrande, which is the name of places in Italy, Chile, Argentina, and elsewhere. It's also a surname. Or perhaps Newstead Montegrade isn't a place at all. Perhaps it's something more ethereal or sublime. Newstead Monegrade: it's only a state of mind. But that's obviously not true, since Newstead Montegrade is full of hotels, spas, and adult chat lines.
