"Massachusetts residents won't have to live near the state line to buy alcohol on Sunday under a plan lawmakers approved last night." Why, it's even better than Congress approving a subsidy for a Hooter's in Shreveport, La.! Details here

A good decision, even though the packies are already open on Sunday where I live.

http://www.denverpost.com/Stories/0,1413,36~417~1773091,00.html Well, it's a Denver Post editorial that details the Hooters subsidy. As for Hooters itself, I'll leave finding that as an exercise for the reader :-).
Making us keep abreast of the situation.

The only problem is the package goods industry really didn't want this. Its going to cost them more to keep their stores open on Sunday. That could effect the price you pay for booze. There are only a couple of towns where the owners wanted this.Workers in retail operations that are required to work on Sunday are paid at time and a half. This is a local option law to boot ,the local pols could vote not to go that route. Trust in God and sin not.Don't blame me I'm like Sparky I voted for Sarah to.

The package store owners were split on this subject -- one reason the Legislature had a hard time making a decision.

I was talking to a manager at a local Liquor store. He and all the employees want the day off as it is now. They are now open Sunday for the holiday season and look forward to January and getting that day off again.
And heaven forfend the Legislature should be so reckless, so derelict in its stewardship of our common interest, as to leave such a matter of critical public policy up to the discretion of the individual store owner.
Actually, not all retailers have to pay time and a half on Sundays anymore. You have to have a certain number of employees working during the course of that day in order to be forced to pay time and a half.
That's all well and good, I just think now it is up to the owners to decide instead of government. Sure some will not like it, but some will and it's now their choice and they can express their concerns to the local pols if they want to keep stores closed on Sundays.

PaulMc asks:

It must have taken him a long time to decide which one to embrace!
