less expensive housing in Boston

I'm doing this month-long program that takes place in down-town Boston/Financial District. I have the option to stay at the YMCA Inn nearby, but I'm looking at subleases/short-term leases outside of downtown and was hoping for some input about the less expensive but still relatively safe neighborhoods I should look at that aren't too far from downtown (I'm thinking a metro ride and 10 minute walk). Thanks!
