where to work, live, can anyone show me around?

I, female, live in Vermont and have been applying for jobs in Boston via Craigslist. Where else do you recommend I look for jobs? I know about the Boston Globe, though. Where should I consider living that would be convenient to the Boston area? Is it a safe city crime wise? Where in the city should I avoid? Any other recommendations?
