I think Joe and Nemo's might actually have gone out of business for the second time....I drove down Cambridge St. today and either it's gone or I didn't notice it, (keeping my eyes on the road?)

There ain't no such animal as a veggie dog.Its just some vile concoction of weeds ground up with spice.

Uh, looked at the ingredient list for a "meat" hot dog lately? There are a lot of things for which you can make fun of us veg*ns, but the superiority of hot dogs ain't one of 'em.

That said, Spike's veggie hot dogs taste an awful lot like what I remember regular hot dogs to taste like. So much so that I wasn't sure that I had gotten an actual veggie dog at first...

As opposed to some vile concoction of leftover animal parts ground up with spice? Yeah, I know what sounds more appetizing to me. Wink

I don't think I've had a meat hot dog -- maybe they don't taste particularly like, um, meat? I've tried hamburger and chicken and they both tasted bloody and gross and exactly like I'd have imagined muscle and fat to taste like. Not something I'd want anything to emulate! I have to be in a junkfood mood to like soy dogs, but when I am, they're pretty tasty. Are hot dogs less meaty than other meat? More MSG than animal parts maybe?

I forget the names but none of them will pass the taste test.I'm one of those guys who takes sample handed out in supermarkets and have tasted 6 or 7 and none of them were even slightly tasty.Give me me a grilled Maple Leaf natural casing hot dog on a toasted roll with brown mustard and sweet relish and I'm in 7th heaven.

Well, I'm sure that there's a little psychological influence in tasting meat when you've been otherwise a life-long veg*n. I'm not really sure what "meaty" tasting would be, but there's a few things I know you've had that taste very much like their meat counterparts.

And yes, lots of the MSG-taste!

Spike's also has excellent homemade rootbeer.

(BTW, rootbeer is a fun food to have your friends and family visiting from abroad try. At least in countries I've had visitors from, nothing like it exists, and just about everyone who's tried it found it disturbing and appalling and medicinal tasting. Try it next time you have visitors!)

Yeah, when the stuff is mocking hellaprocessed meat, it's probably going to taste basically the same as long as they get the seasoning and texture right. That's the stuff they usually make mock versions of. I haven't seen mock bloody steak or mock whole chickens.

OMG those were HILARIOUS.

But yeah, they didn't appear to have like soy bones and soy sinew and soy fat and stuff in them. I think it was just processed chickenesque stuff formed into a chicken shape.

They also had a soy fried egg, complete with annatto-colored yolk. Um.

If they're both processed, they can be indistinguishable. There've been blind taste tests of chicken patties and chickenless patties and so forth, in which they determined that most people couldn't tell.
