Some first-person accounts from the North End (including one from a name you must know, because at WGC, an educated consumer is our best customer):

I'm surprised that Beso hasn't given us a first hand report on these events yet.
Trust in God and sin not.Don't blame me I'm like Sparky I voted for Sarah to.

To my knowledge, nobody was injured except firefighters, but a lot of people lost business and had to throw out spoiling food.

Where are you, Beso? Haven't heard from you in months.

Four firefighters were injured. But more importantly, what a shame about all that spoiling food. I know you didn't mean for that to sound as bad as it looks.

When you're living on a fixed income, spoiled food can be a pretty big deal. Certainly not the same as being injured, but a potentially serious problem.

Thanks all. As I've told Adam, had a hard time logging in for a few months. North End was wild last week. We live directly in the middle of all of the explosions. We were evacuated for about a day anda half and power has benn on/off ever since. That block of Hanover is still blocked off. Wednesday night last was very scary for about 30 minutes. No one knew what the cause was or what was happening. I saw a manhole cover explode 30 feet in the air like a Frisbee. The Mrs. and I ran back into the house avoiding the manholes in our alley w/ every step.

Hi, Beso. Nice to hear from you again, and we're glad you're OK. That's a rather horrifically freaky thing that happened. Here's hoping that the problems get solved--permanently, to boot. Good luck--don't get hit by any flying manhole covers!!

Glad to hear from you again, Beso. Please stay around.

I just walked that block of Hanover, between Prince and Parmenter, and yeah, it's still a mess. Not only is it full of NStar trucks and heavy equipment, but they're jackhammering in front of Caffe dello Sport. That can't be much fun for the people trying to drink coffee or watch soccer games inside.

Thanks...we are getting our electricity via those huge generators. At night, everyone's house is filled w/ the stink of diesel fuel from those things...horrible.

Good Heavens...Men working in front of the Cafe Dello Sporto??? My gosh, you're right. That can't be much fun for the people who want to sit out front and sip latte`s. I'm sure the men jackhammering and the injured firefighters that nobody has mentioned are having a ball though.

Yecchhh!! Sounds really repulsive--and messy. It's not very pleasant to smell the diesel fuel every single night when one's trying to retire and rest for the evening. That's the LAST thing that people want! Hope everything's OK soon, and that things get back to normal quickly--and that you can soon get your electricity pumping in the NORMAL way. All the best, Beso. Again, nice to see you posting here again--glad you're OK.

I have to wonder what you people would have done 25 years ago when noise was actually part of the North End. There would have been 10 street hockey games going on Hanover Street alone, kids playing whiffle ball, fire trucks, cars beeping, etc. Some of you act like you have never set foot in an urban area before. Lighten up. It's only a generator. How much meat did you have in that freezer anyway? It sounds like you saved Jessica McClure.

Jessica McClure?

The world is full of turmoil and struggle, and the most relevant example of a rescue you can think of is from 1987?

I had to Google it to make sure I was even remembering the name right. Wow.

Who's complaing about the noise? 25 years ago, did people sleep w/ visible diesel smoke pouring through their windows for 4 days straight? Oh yeah, and you walked to school in 3 feet of snow uphill both ways. All of those noises you talk about stil exist. No complaints from me. Not having electricity for 3 days is a problem however.

There were some whining about the jackhammers and compressors and one guy had a conniption(i hope I spelled that right) because a fire truck, that was involved in firefighting, was blocking in his beloved BMW. And some who like to sip espresso on the sidewalk were forced to view the unsightly image of people working to get their neighborhood back on track. I must have used your post when I replied. Please excuse me.

My only issue at this point is w/ the Boston Police and NSTAR. The police have been downright nasty when asked the simpliest questions by tourists and delivery men and NSTAR has giveen residents NO INFORMATION on what's going on and when it's going to end. I have a tenant moving in on 9/1 and I honestly don't know where the por girl is going to be allowed to park her truck. Normaly, you can get a one day permit when moving but I can't get an answer for her.

Try calling the Boston Transportation Department. They might have some information that the BPD doesn't have. It gets frustrating when people ask you the same question over and over and you don't have the answer. Nobody should be nasty to anyone, but they might be just as sick of the noise and diesel fumes as everyone else and it is causing them to be a little short tempered with people. I'm not making excuses for them, I'm just saying that it could be the reason. But, try the Transportation Department. They might have an answer.

Toflah: Again, I beg to respectfully differ with you: As a person who also lives in an urban area, I, too recognize that noise is part of urban living, and I'm willing to put up with a good amount of it. However, the stench of diesel fuel wafting through people's windows when they're trying to rest/sleep, and not having electricity for afew days is way out of line. I, too can sympathize, because I still remember when our building had absolutely NO electricity and NO heat for at least three or four days. It was NOT fun, believe me. The manager of our complex solved the heat loss problems by having an emergency switch installed that would ensure against heat loss in the building in the future, that would kick in everytime the power went out. However, having 12-13-hour long electric blackouts, let alone ones that last 3 days, are a nasty thing, and are unacceptable.

Beso, welcome back... forum was considerably less animated without you.

People, everyone knows Beso doesn't drink coffee, so please don't associate him with sipping that stuff outside caffe dello sport. Tongue

Manhole covers: if they're not electrocuting dogs, they're shooting up in the air. Remember the old expression about people who don't like to spend any money? " He throws nickels around like they're manhole covers" Maybe some tightwad in the north end took that literally.
