"he would scale back his weekend and evening hours to spend more time with his wife of 22 years, Diane, who is suffering from exhaustion and depression." reducing weekend & evening hours means that he can't get out of bed in the morning? www.boston.com/...intense_scrutiny/ Let's hope it doesn't get to this point: "President Bush is getting the kind of break most Americans can only dream of -- 33 days away from the office, loaded with vacation time." www.boston.com/...vacationing_record/

I don't think either a President or a Governor are ever really on 'vacation'.

It's been asked before, but I'll ask again: would reactions be different if Mrs. Patrick had, say, cancer or multiple sclerosis or some other clearly physical ailment? *~*~*~* Luceo non uro

Seriously. I don't care WHAT your politics, there's no reason to make ableist comments about anyone, particularly someone you've never met. Stupid crap time.

"ableist"?

Oh Jesus H. Fucking Christ on a stick! Were you this quick with the jokes when you first learned that Mitt Romney's wife had MS?

Yep.
By Dave - Mar 14, 2007, 12:21 PM Post #13 of 167 [In reply to]
I'm not defending the way people are reacting to Mrs. Patrick's problems, but I know for a fact that there would have been similar snarkiness emanating from the opposition had Romney gone through a similar series of blunders like Patrick recently has, and then announced that he was going to lie low for a while to deal with his wife's MS. There would have been the usual liberal shouts of "I question the timing", etc.
By triquetra - Mar 14, 2007, 1:16 PM Post #14 of 167 [In reply to]
None of us can know that for a fact, since it didn't happen. It could have happened, true. Thing about depression is, many people think someone should just be able to deal with it, put on a happy face, fake it 'til you make it, whatever. People with MS don't get told they're not that bad off and they should just cheer up and start walking better. Timing aside, the general public tends to react to physical and mental illnesses quite differently. *~*~*~* Luceo non uro

I dunno...I wouldn't have said that, maybe "great timing", but not implying that he was using his wife's illness as a way to not work nights. I think it's all the media ball-breaking that could be contributing to his wife's condition...not that they're taking advantage, etc... I think it's good that they're open about mental illness - if everyone was, it wouldn't be so taboo.

Isaiah Washington calls cast member a faggot. checks into hospital claims medical condition. Michael Richard calls fan a .....you know checks into hospital claims medical condition Rosie odonell gets into trouble for comments made. checks into hospital claims medical condition Mel gibson makes anti semitic repmarks to policeman checks into hospital claims medical condition. Deval Patrick gets in hot water for helping sub prime lender pals and spending taxpayers money on a 72,000 secretary for his wife. checks into hospital claims medical condition. I think it is reasonable to question the......timing

Deval checked into a hospital? Really? Michael Richards checked into a hospital? Isaiah did? In fact, as of yesterday, I can't find any source that says Diane Patrick has been hospitalized. Are you seriously comparing racial and homophobic slurs to depression? If you can find one source that says Diane Patrick said something inappropriate to a group of people and then blamed it on depression, you might possibly have an analogy to work with here; otherwise, this is one of the weakest slams on people with mental illness I've ever seen. *~*~*~* Luceo non uro

Rosie barely even apologized, much less checked into a hospital or blamed it on a medical condition. There's just no accurate comparison to be made between a bunch of actors saying amazingly stupid things in public and a local politician's wife who is ill. *~*~*~* Luceo non uro

well the point of the post is ...... It seems to be standard procedure these days for famous people and politicians to claim, a medical condition ,right after you have been caught in a bad situation . The timing of the medical condition claim is the same. for all the people mentioned above.
By triquetra - Mar 14, 2007, 4:02 PM Post #20 of 167 [In reply to]
Diane Patrick isn't a politician. Most of the examples you cited didn't blame their words on a medical condition, and even if they did, they didn't blame it on SOMEONE ELSE'S medical condition. If Deval were saying HE was exhausted and depressed, this might make more sense. *~*~*~* Luceo non uro

Calling people ethnic/racist/homophobic slurs is not quite the same as being microscoped and inspected daily.

Thats where he was super slick My wife is sick so stop picking on me.... media. sorry ... but people are believeing this guy less and less all the time.He seems wiilling to lie and trick people to get what he wants. Many people believe this is just another trick to slip away from his wrong doings
By sonia2 - Mar 14, 2007, 4:13 PM Post #23 of 167 [In reply to]
direct quote? I said I wouldn't be surprised if that was the cause of the depression/exhaustion...I get exhausted from reading all the mud-slinging stuff - I can't imagine if it was directed at someone I loved...
By ladytravel - Mar 14, 2007, 4:19 PM Post #24 of 167 [In reply to]
deval is being judged by his actions. It is not mud slinging to question the veracity of a person. thats shows less than honest behavior . The dishonest person has to live with the fact . That people tend to not believe what they say. It is reasonable to question the timing
By eeka - Mar 14, 2007, 4:25 PM Post #25 of 167 [In reply to]
No, you and the others are judging his wife. I don't care if the guy did something horrible -- it's never right to belittle a person or the person's loved one about a person's illness.
